Welcome to Lexden Choral Society
Lexden Choral Society is an all-inclusive community choir based at St Leonard’s Church in Lexden, Colchester. Formed in 1992 by Sarah Blake, our ethos is to perform to the highest standard, but also to create a friendly atmosphere where there are no stars but everyone feels welcome and part of a thriving, enthusiastic ensemble. There are no auditions for new members and everyone’s contribution is equally prized. Sarah conducted the choir until 2014, when John Chillingworth became conductor.
We meet on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm–9.30pm in the St Leonard’s Church Hall on Lexden Road (behind the church). New members are very welcome to join us!
The choir has grown steadily in size and reputation, and music-lovers eagerly look forward to our concerts. We sing a wide variety of music from the great choral classics to opera choruses, musicals, swing standards and pop arrangements. In 2019 this reputation resulted in an invitation to sing at Carnegie Hall, New York.
Here’s a selection of audience feedback after our most recent concert in St Botolph’s for Remembrance 2024:
‘Fantastic concert! Well done everyone. The sound, tone and diction were excellent. Collaboration with the band works so well. I missed singing but it was a joy to be able to listen.’
‘Well done everyone! That was the first time in 24 years that I have been in the audience. It was absolutely superb! Lovely balanced sound with clear diction and lots of light and shade. Wonderful!’
‘Wow! Another superb performance! I was amazed by your wonderful conductors John and Victoria – their passion for performance and audience engagement never cease to amaze me. Congratulations!‘
